Our shop drawing services cover concrete, metals, wood, the building envelope, openings and finishes. They also cover the fire protection, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and electrical trades. Each trade is drafted to the standard or specification it follows, and the table groups the trades by MasterFormat division, the numbering project specifications use.

The contractor or fabricator is responsible for its shop drawings
The contractor or fabricator is responsible for its shop drawings. We draft them on its behalf, the contractor checks and submits them, and the architect or engineer of record (EOR) reviews them only for conformance with the design. Approval does not turn shop drawings into contract documents or move responsibility for dimensions, quantities, and means and methods.
The split between drafting, submitting and reviewing comes from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) A201-2017. Section 3.12 puts submittals on the contractor, and section 4.2.7 limits what the architect's review covers.
Who can make shop drawings?
Detailers and drafters working for the contractor, subcontractor or fabricator make shop drawings. Where the contract delegates the design of a component to the contractor, that part needs a licensed engineer's seal.
A shop drawing set starts from the contract documents and field dimensions
A shop drawing set starts from the documents the trade is bound by and the field dimensions the contractor has checked. We never measure on site, so the shop drawings are only as current as the files and field dimensions you send. Design-side sets for the same project are drafted under our other drafting services.
A returned submittal is worked into the sheets and reissued
The reviewer's comments are worked into the sheets, each change is marked as a revision, and the set is reissued for the resubmittal. Unlimited revisions within the agreed scope cover it, and every issue passes three QA stages first: a self-check by the drafter, a peer check, and a final review by a lead.
Shop drawing questions with a straight yes or no
Contractors ask these before handing over a trade, because each answer changes who carries the risk on a submittal.
Do you design steel connections?
No. We detail connections only after the engineer of record or your own engineer has designed them, and we never design them ourselves.
Are your fire sprinkler drawings ready to submit without a certified designer?
No. We draft to NFPA 13 and do not certify a layout. A certified or licensed designer on your side reviews and signs the set before submittal.
Can you work in our project's model files?
Yes. Shop drawings are drafted in whichever of Tekla Structures, Revit or AutoCAD your project uses.
Are shop drawings part of the contract documents?
No. Under AIA A201-2017 section 3.12.4, shop drawings are submittals, not contract documents.
