Seven things set the cost of a CAD drafting quote
A quote is built from seven things: the drawing type, the sheet count, the inputs supplied and the turnaround. The rest are project size and complexity, the level of model detail on building information modeling (BIM) work, and any scope change after the quote. The table gives each one's effect and what to send.
| What changes the quote | Why | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing type | Each drawing type, such as a permit set or an as-built set, has its own sheets and checks | Which drawings you need |
| Sheet count | More sheets mean more to draw, though the count alone does not set the price | The sheets you expect, or the project's scope |
| Inputs supplied | The quote is scoped from the files you send | Your sketches, PDFs, scans, CAD files or markups |
| Turnaround | A less urgent schedule lowers the quote, and the delivery date is fixed in it | The date you need the set |
| Project size and complexity | A larger or more complex project is more drafting | The size of the building and the systems it has |
| Model detail on BIM work | The level of model detail a model is built to changes the work | The level or standard the project requires |
| Scope changes after the quote | Work added beyond the agreed scope amends the quote | Any change, as soon as it is known |
For example, what goes into the building permit set is described on its own page.
Does a quote come as an hourly rate or a price per sheet?
No. A quote is one fixed amount for the project, with the delivery date in it, because sets with the same sheet count often differ in how much work they take.
A rate only guesses at the hours behind a set, so we name the amount for the finished set instead.
Three things lower a quote
Three things lower a quote: sending a project as a whole, accepting a less urgent schedule, and taking a monthly retainer for steady work. Each changes what the quote has to cover, not the quality of the checks that every set passes.
A request with files becomes a fixed quote within 24 hours
The fixed quote follows within 24 hours of the files arriving. A project that is large or whose scope is still open goes through a discovery call and then a written proposal.
The quote fixes the amount and the delivery date
The amount and the delivery date are fixed in the quote before drafting starts. That amount covers unlimited revisions within the agreed scope, and work beyond that scope amends the quote.
Small drawing sets in 2 business days. Mid-size and larger projects from 3 business days, with the schedule fixed in your quote.
